Jaguar has announced it will offer a long-wheelbase XF sedan for the Chinese market.
Manufactured as part of a joint-venture with Chery Automobile Company, the longer new sedan, called the ‘XF L’, will be constructed at Chery Jaguar Land Rover’s plant at Changshu in Eastern China.
Set to go on sale in “less than two years”, the XF L will be created in a new factory claimed to be China’s first purpose-built aluminium body shop.
Featuring more than 300 robots, the new facility was crucial to maintain the Jaguar XF's aluminium-intensive construction.
The new facility in China will also be joined in the future by a similar factory in Slovakia, Brazil and India, plus a manufacturing partnership with Magna Steyr in Austria.
Jaguar Land Rover claims that car manufacture outside of the UK will help it offer its customers “more exciting new models” while protecting itself against currency fluctuations.
The Jaguar XF L is JLR's third product to be made in China and joins the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery already made in the populous nation.
Jaguar says there are currently no plans to offer the XF L outside of China so it’s very unlikely the long-wheelbase BMW 5 Series rival will ever make it to Europe or, indeed, Australia.
