Jaguar’s highly-touted Ingenium engine range will expand later this year following confirmation of a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder powertrain.
Set to debut on the XE and XF sedans and F-Pace SUV from late 2017, the new engine produces a credible 221kW/400Nm.
On the XE mid-size sedan, those figures translate to a swift 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds and a respectable fuel claim figure of 6.7L/100km combined.
On the slightly larger XF, the engine brings a 5.9 second time and 6.8L/100km fuel use figure, while on the F-Pace, the engine notches triple figures in 6.0 seconds and uses a still-credible 7.7L/100km combined.
“We continue to broaden the range of our Ingenium engine family, giving customers more choice than ever before,” said Jaguar product engineering director Nick Rogers.
“Our new 221kW petrol engine provides the performance synonymous with Jaguar, while delivering enhanced fuel economy thanks to its state-of-the-art exhaust technology and pioneering valve train design. This clean and more efficient engine perfectly complements the advanced lightweight aluminium body structure of our XE, XF and F-PACE models.”
The new Ingenium engine employs twin-scroll turbochargers with ceramic ball bearings to reduce friction, along with a high flow compressor wheel for enhanced performance. The engine is paired with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, sending drive to the rear wheels on the XE and XF, and all four wheels on the F-Pace.
The engine heralds numerous changes across the XE, XF and F-Pace portfolios.
As part of 2018 model year updates, the XE and XF will soon include a gesture boot lid control as well as Jaguar’s configurable dynamics technology, allowing the driver to tailor the car’s gearbox, throttle and steering settings to suit their personal preference.
All three models will embrace forward vehicle guidance technology and forward traffic detection.
Price and specifications of the 2018 ranges will be shown closer to release.
