Petrolheads rejoice: the new 2022 Jaguar F-TYPE is now exclusively available with supercharged V8 engine power.
The previous four- and six-cylinder turbo-petrol models have been ditched, raising the entry price for the British sports car to $159,900 plus on-road costs for the V8-powered P450 coupe.
That’s up from $127,942 plus ORCs for the outgoing four-cylinder P300 model.
The revised 2022 Jaguar F-TYPE range now consists of just two trim levels – the new rear-drive F-TYPE R-DYNAMIC P450 in coupe and convertible guise (priced from $159,900 and $164,900 plus ORCs respectively), and the all-wheel drive F-TYPE R in coupe body style only (from $264,966).
The order books are now open, with first Australian deliveries arriving in early December.
The new entry-level F-TYPE P450 V8 (331kW/580Nm) is cheaper, considerably more powerful and faster than the P380 supercharged V6 model it replaces (280kW/460Nm).
It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds (versus 4.9sec), and reach a top speed of 285km/h.
The top-spec Jaguar F-TYPE R is powered by a high-output version of the same 5.0-litre supercharged V8 (423kW/700Nm) that propels it from 0-100km/h in 3.7sec, with a top speed of 300km/h.
As Jaguar Land Rover’s AJV8 petrol engines continue to be phased out, the F-TYPE could soon adopt the same BMW-sourced 4.4-litre turbo V8 as the new Range Rover.
But in only a few years’ time, Jaguar’s rich history of rumbling V8 engines will end as it kills off all combustion engines by 2025 and transitions to a Tesla-like EV-only car-maker.
For now, the F-TYPE model range has been condensed as sales of the six- and four-cylinder models slowed, and the ageing V6 was put out to pasture.
“We decided to rationalise the range as the V8 was always the strong seller, and now the V8 offers stronger value with P450,” said Jaguar Land Rover Australia spokesman James Scrimshaw.
“The P450 is more affordable and faster than the supercharged V6 it replaces, and there’s now more equipment in F-TYPE R.”
All Jaguar F-TYPE models are fitted as standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, metal scuff plates and a dual-mode switchable exhaust system for loud or quiet V8 acoustics.
The force-fed V8 hooks up to an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters.
Adaptive dampers are part of the chassis package to suit different driving scenarios, and the steering weight, throttle response and gearshifts can be adjusted as well.
Cabin highlights include a 10-inch central touch-screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display with map overlays, and a high-end 10-speaker Meridian sound system (380W) with two subwoofers.
Extra features for the F-TYPE R includes an exterior black pack, 20-inch satin grey five-spoke alloy wheels, a fixed panoramic glass roof, aluminium gearshift paddles, a blind spot assist pack, a tyre pressure monitoring system and metallic, premium or SVO gloss metallic paint for no extra cost.
Like all Jags sold in Australia, the F-TYPE is covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and five years’ roadside assist.
Originally designed to be a Porsche 911 killer, the Jaguar F-TYPE first arrived in 2013 and was facelifted in 2019.
Expect to see a spiritual successor to the F-TYPE by 2025, following Jaguar’s trademarking of the EV-TYPE name.
