Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) has reportedly begun developing a GT4 race car based on the Jaguar F-TYPE, it has been revealed.
Set to be the first factory-produced Jaguar race car developed in-house since the Le Mans winning C-Type and D-Type of the 1950s, the brand's return to racing has been revealed by British mag, Autosport.
The project is claimed to be headed up by renowned motorsport designer, Graham Humphrys, who in the past designed the Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR back in 1999 and recently reportedly teamed up with Adrian Newey to design the Aston Martin Valkyrie.
It's thought that the F-TYPE racer will be ready to race for the 2018 season. According to Autosport, three F-TYPE GT4s have already been commissioned for the GT4 European Series.
When it races next year, the F-TYPE GT4 will be the first official Jaguar GT racing car since the XKR GT2 that was developed by the Paul Gentilozzi's RSR team. That car competed in the American Le Mans Series from 2010-11 but with little success.
It's hoped the GT4 program will be a pre-cursor for a full factory-backed GT3 project.
