Melbourne-based firm Jaunt Motors has launched a new EV conversion for the iconic Mini Moke that transforms the pint-sized ute and convertible into an unlikely open-air hot hatch-hunter.
Announcing that it has adapted the ADR-compliant EV conversion kit already available for the classic Mini to the roofless Moke, the reengineering includes ditching the wheezy old A-series engine and swapping in a single e-motor and 19kWh battery.
Producing around 72kW/175Nm, Jaunt says the post-conversion Moke can launch from 0-100km/h in around seven seconds, with its latest EV conversion providing “laugh-out-loud” levels of acceleration.
Described as a ‘high-end conversion’, the new kit isn’t for home installation and has instead been developed for qualified workshops.
Comprising of a new 400-volt battery, electric motor, inverter, drive shafts, cooling system for the motor, new 12-volt electrics, a new dash, modern gauges, switchgear and even a new e-brake, Jaunt Motors has fabricated all the panels needed for a slick conversion.
Both steering and suspension upgrades are also offered and unlike other EV conversions, the little Moke EV is capable of both bi-directional charging and regenerative braking using the e-motor on the move.
Post-conversion, Jaunt Motors claims the Moke performs like a brand-new vehicle.
“This isn’t just a loose collection of parts,” said the firm’s co-founder Dave Budge.
“It’s a complete platform we’ve engineered, built and tested to ADR compliance and the latest EV safety standards.
“Now we’re making it available to others who care about doing conversions correctly. It allows restorers and auto specialists to deliver fully roadworthy electric Mokes that are safe, legal and will last another fifty years.”
According to Jaunt, Mokes converted using its new EV platform have been engineered to meet modern safety standards and are eligible to be registered in every state and territory in Australia.
Motivated to make iconic classic vehicles “more accessible and sustainable”, Jaunt Motors currently offer conversions for old Land Rovers, Minis and the Porsche 911.
The Mini Moke EV conversions are priced from $130,000, plus the cost of the donor car.
In some markets, the Mini Moke has already made a comeback as an EV, with Moke International currently selling a right-hand drive, all-electric version in the UK for £35,995 ($A75,000).
