John Cooper Works goes topless
John Cooper Works with 170kW tops MINI Convertible rangeMINI will launch a John Cooper Works variant to top off its new Convertible line-up. The 170kW 2.0-litre turbo tear-away will boast a 0-100km/h time of 6.5sec and a top speed of over 240km/h when it arrives here later this year.
MINI showed off the JCW range-topper at the new Convertible’s launch in Los Angeles this week. The JCW will make its public debut at the New York Auto Show next month.
Powered by the latest 2.0-litre direct-injected TwinPower twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder, the John Cooper Works Convertible is the fastest MINI drop-top ever.
MINI promises proper hot hatch performance and handling. And if our initial drive of the Cooper S version (more later this week) is anything to go by, it may not be an idle boast.
Compared to its Cooper S counterpart, the JCW Convertible gets an upgraded brake package by Brembo and a more vocal exhaust system. Other unique features include JCW sports seats and a tweaked body kit.
An electronic front ‘differential’ and upgraded stability control system is also featured. Alloys are 17-inch as standard but may be upgraded to 18-inch once Australian specification is finalised.
The JCW tops of the new MINI Convertible range. Based on the third generation hatch launched in late 2014, the MINI soft-top is also offered in standard Cooper and Cooper S variants. In Australia, the range kicks off from $37,900 for the 100kW, three-cylinder, 1.5-litre MINI Cooper.
The JCW Convertible is expected to arrive in Australia in September. Pricing is tipped to be around $53,000 for the six-speed auto. A six-speed manual is available but will be order-only for Australian buyers.
