Joss Developments has generated a lot of publicity for a car that has never been available for sale. But is the Australian supercar builder finally preparing to unleash its powerful JP1 to the public?
The Melbourne-based sports car company first revealed the Joss Supercar to an unsuspecting public in 2004, coincidentally at that year's Melbourne Motor Show, and the high performance 410kW/650Nm V8-powered coupe has since been teased hinted at -- even coded into several videogames -- but never released for sale.
With news that Joss Developments has purchased floor space at the 2011 Australian International Motor Show (AIMS), could the company be getting ready for an official launch of its 340km/h mid-engined sports car?
Not quite.
An 'evaluation' version of the company's JP1 supercar will be on show, along with a "wind tunnel model of the production car" according to motor show organisers. Joss Developments also says it will have a "few surprises" at the AIMS, one of which will include a preview of the JP1 production car, via computer generated imagery.
Matt Thomas, the founder and technical director at JOSS Developments, acknowledged that the company's motor show attendance had been spotty of late, but confirmed that progress is being made. Much of the wait for the niche car maker's first product has been due to building the business, as opposed to building the car.
"We had an amazing reception for our JT1 prototype in Melbourne several years ago, but building a car business is very involved. So Joss Developments has spent the last few years working on the business: building investment, working with our technical suppliers, and putting in place the right people so that when we launch JP1 the company will be geared up to deliver a great product to the market.
"Joss is about the best of the best, and the best takes time. I think visitors to AIMS will see that for themselves.
"Joss Developments is in a very good place at the moment. We now have significant investment and a team of technical partners – several of which will have Joss components on our stand for everyone to see – the envy of the industry," Mr Thomas stated.
The Australian International Motor Show begins in Friday July 1 and runs until Sunday July 10 in Melbourne.
