Yes, your eyes are deceiving you – this is not a photocopied Ford Ranger but rather a new electric vehicle from Chinese brand Kandi.
Dubbed the Kandi Off-Road EV K32, or simply the Kandi K32, the all-electric dual-cab ute is classified as a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) in the US, where it has just launched with two models – Standard Range and Long Range.
Measuring 5437mm long, 1869mm wide and 2083mm tall, the 2021 Kandi K32 definitely sizes up against the current Ford Ranger, but there is nothing Ranger-like about the K32’s dual-motor electric powertrain that provides four-wheel drive and zero-emissions motoring.
Combined power output is still to be confirmed, but on the entry-level Standard Range – which is priced from $US27,699 ($A37,990) – the motors are backed by a 20.7kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers a claimed 97km of driving range.
Top speed is listed at 105km/h, while a battery recharging time of 7.5 hours via a 240V household outlet is quoted.
Going for the Long Range version – from $US34,499 ($A47,293) – ups the battery capacity to 50kWh, which in turn extends the range out to 241km.
Top speed and battery recharging time remains the same.
In terms of utilitarianism, the K32 has a gross vehicle weight rating of 2430kg which, when the 1855kg kerb weight is deducted, leaves a maximum payload of 575kg, including cabin occupants.
Anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution are fitted standard, while other features include climate control, a 10-inch infotainment touch-screen, Bluetooth connectivity, reversing camera, front airbags, ISOFIX points, automatic central locking, a speed warning and security system.
