Karting comp for schools

New championship aims to foster interest in motorsport among students
There's a new outlet for youthful passions and sporting endeavour in schools – and it's targeting kids with a need for speed.
The Australian Schools Karting Championship opens up a window of opportunity for school-aged students to learn about motorsport competition in a safe, affordable environment. Organisers claim that the championship provides an alternative to other sporting competitions of the more traditional kind.
Each team comprises three people and entry to the three-round series costs $145 per team, covering insurance, kart hire, race suits, helmets and fees.
"The Australian Schools Karting Championship highlights what makes racing great – teamwork, healthy competition, forming new friendships and having fun in the process," says Gerald Chait, AKSC organiser.
"It will be a great way for students to get a taste of motor sport without having to invest in helmets, race suits or their own kart but still compete for a great prize pool."
Prizes include a test drive in an ART Race Kart, joining a V8 Ute race pit crew for a weekend, and a tour of an engineering facility where karts are built. According to Chait, the championship will educate aspiring drivers and hopefully instil an awareness of the risks associated with driving – before they receive their licences.
"By reinforcing that speed belongs on the track and not on the road through programs like the Australian Schools Karting Championship, we can give young motorists a healthier attitude towards driving," Chait was quoted saying in a press release.
Of the three rounds, the first is a local heat comprising practice sessions and a one-hour endurance race, with each team member in the kart for two 10-minute drives. Seven drivers will be selected from each local round, to take part in the second round, which is a state-wide round consisting of qualifying, a heat race and a final race. The seven drivers will be taken from the top two teams and the fastest outright driver in the first round.
For the third (national) round, the top two drivers from each state and two wildcard entries will compete against each other in two sprint races and a final race. The first two rounds will be held outside school hours.
Dates and venues for the state and national rounds are as follows:
Brisbane - 3:30PM Tuesday 6 May, Go Karting Brisbane
Melbourne - 8:30AM Sunday 11 May, Le Mans Grand Prix Circuit
Sydney - 3:30PM Tuesday 13 May, Venue TBA
Canberra - 3:30PM Wednesday 14 May, Power Kart Raceway
