He's probably the world's most famous tyre shredder, with hundreds of millions of people viewing Ken Block's incredible Gymkhana videos featuring mad cars doing mad things.
His car control is exceptional and he does stunts, he does drifts, and makes people smile. What's not to like?
This time around Ken Block has dubbed the vehicular spectacular "Climbkhana", a 20km sprint up the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Located in Colorado in the USA, the road has over 150 turns and finishes at more than 4km above sea level.
That's just over 14,000 feet for the few countries left in the world that haven't adopted metric.
Anyway, we visited Pikes Peak and made a video back in 2013, as Sebastien Loeb smashed the hill climb record and we can attest to its perilous hairpins and high speed straights, most of which result in treacherous drops which are not very friendly to cars or people. Or even mountain lions.
But boy are the vistas gorgeous.
Ken Block is back in his 1965 Mustang, nicknamed the Hoonicorn V2, for this run. Reconfigured in 2016 with a twin turbo setup – both turbos peeking out of the bonnet, exhausts blowing flames thanks to the methanol fuel mix – the 410 cubic-inch V8 pumps out 1400hp, or about 1030kW.
It also eats through tyres like a silverfish in a flaky 54-year-old Enid Blyton novel.
Block has left behind some of the zany stunts of previous Gymkhana videos and gone back to basics with this. It's just extreme drifting and extreme speeds.
Take a look at the 2:00 minute mark for an example. He shoves the Hoonicorn in deep to the hairpin and sling shots out with the kind of lethal force that only an all-wheel drive 6.7-litre twin-turbo V8 can do.
There's another moment at 5:16 where Block drops the back of the Mustang off the bitumen and onto dirt, pushing things dangerously close to the edge. It's awesome.
Enough reading, get watching!
