Hyundai Motor Group has announced it plans to introduce potentially life-saving centre airbags for future Hyundai, Kia and Genesis models in a bid to protect occupants in the event of a side impact.
Following in the tyre tracks of General Motors, which has similar airbag tech, the new centre side airbag works in unison with side torso and curtain airbags.
When an impact is detected, they inflate to specifically prevent a potential head clash between the driver and passenger, which can prove fatal in severe side-impact collisions.
Expanding in the space between where a driver and passenger sit, the airbag still inflates if a vehicle crashes into the passenger door to provide added protection.
Hyundai says the new centre bag has been proven to reduce injuries from head and/or body clashes by up to 80 per cent.
Claimed to be the lightest centre airbag in the world, the new Hyundai design employs patented technology and tips the scales at just 500g.
Its small size is also said to future-proof the Korean auto giant's vehicles by accommodating radical seat redesigns.
