Kia Niro Plus brings superseded EV and hybrid back on sale

‘New’ small SUV models based on previous-generation Kia Niro now available in Australia

The 2022 Kia Niro Plus is now available in Australia, marking the return of the brand’s short-lived previous-generation small SUV that was superseded earlier this year.

Full details are still to be provided, but the Kia Niro Plus is currently offered with the choice of either a petrol-electric hybrid or full battery-electric powertrain.

Both are offered only in the base ‘S’ model grade, with prices starting from $41,710 plus on-road costs for the hybrid and $64,450 plus ORCs for EV.

That compares to the new-generation S hybrid and EV models that start from $44,380 and $65,300 plus ORCs respectively.

Notably, the previous-generation Niro that launched here in 2021 opened at $39,990 plus ORCs for the S hybrid, while the S EV carried a $62,590 plus ORCs sticker price.

Early details to surface show that the Kia Niro Plus twins are slightly taller and longer than equivalent versions of the first-generation model, but their specifications are comparable.

They do not yet appear on the Kia Australia website, but a spokesperson told carsales that they’re available for private buyers as well as fleets.

“The initial units arriving have been snapped up by fleet sales,” the spokesperson said.

“It is available for a private buyer, however the majority of sales will be fleet.”

With no mechanical changes over the previous model, the hybrid still churns out 104kW/265Nm courtesy of its 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol-electric powertrain, while the EV throws out 150kW/395km from its single electric motor and has an effective driving range of 427km.

Standard equipment on both includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED tail-lights, an 8.0-inch infotainment system, smartphone mirroring, DAB+ digital radio, dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and rain-sensing wipers.
