Kia's new small car will be introduced as 'cee'd' at the Paris motor show in September.
Pronounced "seed", the name combines 'CE' standing for European Community, and 'ED' indicating the car is a European Design created with European consumers in mind.
"cee'd is a short, dynamic and innovative name," explained Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President of Kia Motors Europe. "It's unconventional, a name which breaks the automotive rules."
The car was called 'ED' when Kia announced production in July (see separate story
). European customers will choose from a range of four engines comprising 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0-litre CVVT petrol engines and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine.cee'd will be produced at Kia's first-ever European manufacturing facility in Slovakia and is scheduled for sale in Europe in December.
The five-door hatchback cee'd will be up against C-segment favourites such as Opel Astra, Ford Focus and VW Golf.
Kia says no decision has yet been made on whether the cee'd will be brought to Australia.
