Kia reveals all-new Sorento

Kia has issued the first official image of its all-new Sorento, even though the revamped SUV isn't due to debut until next month's Seoul motor show.

It's a dramatic departure from the existing model, not only from a visual perspective, but also in that it adopts a car-based monocoque chassis in lieu of the utilitarian ladder-frame architecture that underpins the current model.

What this means is that the new Sorento will offer better on-road manners, but in all likelihood at the cost of some off-road/towing ability vis-à-vis the rugged body-on-frame all-terrainer that currently wears the nameplate.

As evident from the accompanying images, the new-age SUV is longer and discernibly lower than the current model, and there's more than a hint of Mitsubishi Outlander in its proportions.

Those with good memories will also have noticed the parallels between it and the KND-4 concept that Kia revealed at the 2007 Seoul motor show.

Engine choices will include a 2.2-litre diesel unit with 138kW, and there will also be a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit, as well as a V6.

The new SUV will be offered with the option of seven seats, and the company is said to have invested considerable effort in a bid to improve cabin quality and interior space levels.

The Sorento was introduced to Australia in February 2003, and an update in 2007 brought a new-generation turbodiesel engine, along with a few cosmetic tweaks.

Keen pricing means the Sorento remains a steady seller for Kia Australia, averaging just under 100 sales per month in 2008, but it's now starting to feel its age. The new model should arrive here in early 2010.

Meanwhile, the South Korean manufacturer will also next year launch a new baby MPV likely to be called the Rio Plus, which will be based on the Kia No3 concept recently revealed at the Geneva motor show.
