Series II badges will adorn the Euro Sportage, to distinguish the lightly revised model from its predecessor. Other changes to the specification include: HID headlamps, static cornering lamps, aero blade front wipers, partial-leather seat trim, rear seat warmer, front wiper de-icer and an Active ECO mode for the diesel automatic variant.
The leather inside now features a new stitch pattern and colour and the headrests have been redesigned. Central locking buttons are now located on both driver and passenger doors, the glovebox is lockable and the digital clock is relocated to the audio system head unit. Slovakian-built models also feature extended use of soft-touch materials inside and the air conditioning system delivers hot or cold air from up to seven different vent modes.
Externally, the new cars can be identified by fog lamps in the rear reflector clusters and the rear bumper has been restyled.
The model range will be structured in three tiers: Si, SLi and Platinum, with the entry-level grade limited to front-wheel drive only, but with an automatic option as well as the standard manual transmission. SLi and Platinum variants will all be four-wheel drive/automatic variants. Kia is dropping the 2.4-litre petrol engine, with the drivetrain options now comprising just 2.0-litre Theta II petrol four-cylinder, or 2.0-litre R Series Diesel, which is now Euro 5-compliant. While the petrol engine is available across the range, the diesel will be limited to SLi and Platinum models.
“Really, the only problem we have had since the arrival of the Sportage is getting enough to meet demand,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Tony Barlow, said, in a press release issued yesterday. “The opportunity to have consistent supply by taking production from Europe makes perfect sense and will benefit customers and dealers alike.
“While this is the first European-built Kia on the market in Australia, it will not be the last with the exciting pro_cee’d GT coming from the same Zilina production facility early next year.”
