Kia's next EV will be a large SUV

Korean car-maker says it will follow e-Niro and Soul EV with battery-powered Mazda CX-9-sized SUV

Kia has confirmed that it will launch an all-new, pure-electric large SUV based on the Imagine concept it unveiled at last year's Geneva motor show.

According to

, which broke the story, the stylish four-door SUV-coupe is being readied for a 2021 on sale date.

The production version of the Imagine -- which wears a design that blends SUV with sports sedan and crossover -- will rival new battery-powered SUVs like the Tesla Model Y and Polestar 2, although the Kia is expected to be much bigger.

Set to sit on an all-new dedicated EV architecture that will be shared with Hyundai, the Imagine will be the first of a new family of zero-emission SUVs and large sedans from the Korean car-maker.

Sources told the Brit mag the large Kia EV will be able to cover up to 800km between charges, although most versions will a range of around 500km.

Unlike other plug-in Kia and Hyundai models, the production Imagine will come with induction charging technology, which could make the large SUV the first model from the Korean auto giant to be able to be topped up using charging mats.

Kia has already announced that it will launch 11 EVs by 2025 as part of a $A37 billion electrification strategy.

Back at the 2019 Swiss show, the Imagine stunned show-goers with not only its striking looks but its advanced interior that boasted 21 individual infotainment screens.
