Knight Rider movie in the works but will the Hoff return to the driver's seat?

Iconic ‘80s crime-fighting car to make big-screen debut – but will KITT still be a Trans-Am muscle car? More importantly, will Michael Knight still be played by David Hasselhoff?

The coolest car ever created for TV (sorry Herbie the Love Bug) is set to hit the big screen with an all-new Knight Rider movie confirmed.

KITT is back, and the talking, missile-launching, machine-gunning, transforming Pontiac Trans Am supercar is going to be phenomenal.

Although it’s in the early planning stages and no actors – vehicle or human – have been attached to the film, fans of the TV series that ran between 1982 and 1986 will be pumped to see Knight Rider return.

Deadline.com first broke the news, confirming the new Knight Rider movie will be produced by Spyglass Media and James Wan, the latter with runs on the board in car movies, as the director of Furious 7.

TJ Fixman is writing the film script and although the plot is not yet known, the original TV show centred on Michael Knight, played by David Hasselhoff, and his car, KITT, who were a crime-fighting duo.

KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) is a high-performance Pontiac Tran-Am with a super-smart AI personality and enough gadgets to make James Bond blush.

As well as being almost indestructible thanks to its Tri-Helical Plasteel 1000 molecular bonded shell (bullet-proof paint?), a rocket-powered turbo boost system, missile launchers, attack lasers, Gatling guns, EMPs, anti-missile flares, a grappling hook and winch and even a two-wheel ski mode.

Make it snow Hollywood, make it snow.

It’s worth checking out Wikipedia to see the full list of gadgets and we can only hope the olfactory sensors that allow KITT to ‘smell’ danger are included.

It’s not clear if David Hasselhoff will return or make a cameo appearance in the film nor what car will feature. Given that the Knight Rider TV series and TV movie remake from 2008 featured a Ford Mustang, and the fact that KITT can transform into other vehicles on a whim, it’s possible the highest bidder will get the gong.

Imagine the new Tesla Roadster getting the nod!? Elon Musk has lots of friends in Hollywood (Johnny Depp not included)… stranger things have happened.
