Koenigsegg has announced it has sold its FreeValve camless engine technology to Chinese car-maker Qoros Auto.
Making its debut at the 2016 Guangzhou motor show, the new tech does away with the the traditional camshaft and uses the Swedish car-maker's pneumatic-hydraulic-electric-actuators.
The advantage of the tech is, it’s said, to allow a more precise combustion with infinite adjustment for valve lift on both intake and exhaust.
Adding the FreeValve technology to a 1.6-litre turbo was said to have boosted power to 170kW/320Nm - increasing power by 47 per cent while boosting torque by 45 per cent. Fuel use, meanwhile, was cut 15 per cent.
According to Koenigsegg, the FreeValve tech also cuts the weight of even a small engine by as much as 20kg as the engine does without throttle bodies, a camshaft, timing gear, sensors and, even, direct injection.
Qoros says it will continue to develop the new engine tech with a fleet of engines.
It’s not known when the first FreeValve engine will go into production.
