KOUP d'grace

Kia has unveiled a stylish concept in New York, previewing future design directions

Kia is committed to a style-led agenda for its future models and the Californian-designed KOUP concept shows that the Korean company can draw upon design talent from both sides of the Atlantic.

Not to be outdone by the company's European design studio, the Californian facility has produced an attractive small sports coupe for the New York International Auto Show. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct injection, the KOUP develops roughly 390Nm of torque between 2000 and 4000rpm. Peak power is approximately 216kW.

Drive is via the MacPherson strut-suspended front wheels and braking is provided by cross-drilled rotors and Brembo calipers. Suspension is independent all around, with a multi-link set-up at the rear. 245/40 ZR19 tyres are monitored on the move by Kia's Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Safety features fitted include stability control and six airbags.

"Kia strives to appeal to the emotional side of car enthusiasts who seek adventure and want to take a leap into the future with style and advanced technology, and the KOUP effectively delivers," said Tom Kearns, chief designer of Kia Motors America.
