KTM X-BOW GT confirmed for Oz

Austrian manufacturer introduces a windscreen to its low-slung offering

KTM has released a ‘GT’ version of its X-BOW sports car to Australia.

Based on the same mechanics as the existing X-BOW R, the X-BOW GT employs a new windscreen and added mod cons to offer a more user-friendly road driving experience. Pricing is set at $189,990 plus on-road costs, which is $20,000 more than the donor vehicle.

As before, a carbon monocoque tub sits in front of a mid-mounted Audi-derived 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol offering 220kW and 420Nm , mated to a six-speed manual. Increased weight of 847kg (up 57kg) slows the GT’s 0-100km/h claim from 3.9 seconds to 4.1 seconds.

“All the powertrain and gearbox, wheels, suspension and brakes are on the R,” said Richard Gibbs, spokesman for Simply Sports Cars, the official KTM Cars distributor. “This will appeal to people that aren’t so necessarily interested in a track toy. It’s a car they can go out each and every weekend in more of a cruiser form.

“It’s softer, less harsh experience by KTM standards but still a raw driving experience.”

The GT’s windscreen features laminated safety glass that is heatable and paired with a single-arm windscreen wiper. Side windows open and close via gas shock absorbers mounted to a thin A-pillar structure.

Inside - if you want to call it that - the KTM plays on the theme of simplicity, forgoing typical indicator stalks and switchgear for steering-wheel mounted buttons. There is also a digital LCD display conveying vital functions, along with wing mirrors.

Those after more protection from the elements can option an ‘X-Top’ fabric roof for the GT at an added cost of $2499. There are also luggage pods and padded textile/leather seats available that are specific to the GT.

Like the R, the GT forgoes antilock brakes, traction control and stability control – thereby governing SSC to a maximum of 25 imports annually under the Federal Government’s Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles Scheme (SEVS).

Standard service costs for the X-Bow GT sit at $325 plus GST and parts. There’s also a two-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.

The new addition is available in selected showrooms now.
