Its polarising X6 SUV might only be a screaming success in North America, Italy and a handful of other countries, but that has been enough to inspire BMW to build the Concept X4.
Based around the X3 architecture, the Concept X4 delivers X3 versatility and practicality in a swoopier body, much like the stylistic favour the oft-maligned X6 did in 2008 for the more traditional, conservative X5.
While it has been dubbed a “Concept” in the German style, the X4 will be built in Spartanburg in the United States, and will be on sale in Europe before the middle of 2014.
Positioned to sit above the X3 and beneath the X5, the Concept X4 is a near-production-ready Sports Activity Tourer (as BMW calls its SUVs).
It is characterised by its swooping roofline, which gives it a scale-model X6 silhouette, its 21-inch wheels and tyres and its 2810mm wheelbase.
It’s also a long machine, with a 4648mm overall length, a 1915mm width and it’s 1622mm higher, most of which will carry over, give or take a few millimetres, into the production car.
