LA MOTOR SHOW: BMW X1 Concept K2 Powder Ride

BMW gets off-piste with new concept and production X1 models, designed for avid snow chasers

BMW will take the wraps off its production-based prototype car, the Concept K2 Powder Ride, for the first time at the 2012 Los Angeles International Motor show. The vehicle is a collaboration with ski maker K2,  designed to appeal to snow sport aficionados.

The German car maker will have a strong presence at the last major international motor show of 2012, Los Angeles, with no less than three concept cars; the new i concept car, i8 Concept Roadster and this - the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride.

Based on the BMW X1 compact SUV, which has just been updated for Australia thanks to a mild facelift, the Concept K2 Powder Ride was developed for North American and European markets, appealing to motorists keen on snow sports.

According to BMW, the Concept K2 Powder Ride "is a reflection of the adrenaline rush of full-speed downhill fun" and is kitted out with a range of snow-savvy features, including an "exclusive roof structure" a bright orange paint job and an 8mm increased ride height.

The extroverted BMW concept rides on 19-inch light-alloy wheels finished in Ferric Grey, featuring polished spokes that "exude a feeling of power and presence".

Tinted windows and matt black roof rails with LED spotlights are fitted, while a high end Harman Kardon sound system has been installed in the roof box, which "turns the X1 into a powerful sound stage for après ski fun with a difference at the end of the valley run".

A subwoofer is also included, naturally.

While the Concept K2 Powder Ride takes the mountain-mobile motif to the extreme, BMW has confirmed a less extreme version of the vehicle for production, the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition finished in white, which will be on sale in the Northern Hemisphere during their winter months from November.

It comes with xLine aluminium roof rails and a 460 litre roof box, fitted boot mat, all-weather floor mats, ski and snowboard bag, and buyers also get a pair of limited edition K2 LTD Powder Ride skis. Other features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a sports steering wheel and ambient lighting.

The X1 Powder Ride Edition is available on xDrive28i and xDrive 35i X1 models, but is not earmarked for Australia.

BMW Australia's Product Communications Manager, Scott Croaker, said that while the special edition model won't be offered in Australia, several of the accessories, such as the roof rails, can be fitted to new X1 models.
