Volkswagen will officially unveil the next chapter in the Beetle story at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month. The west coast US show, which is increasing each year in global significance, will host the formal debut of the new generation Beetle Convertible.
Officially on sale in Europe in November, the Beetle Convertible will be offered with seven engine options, though only a couple will likely come Down Under. In its home market the entry-level engine is a 1.2-litre TSI petrol four rated at 77kW. In addition, 1.4 and 2.0-litre petrols will be offered with up to 147kW. Turbodiesels up to 103kW are also on the German price list.
The original Beetle Convertible was launched in 1949. The car reappeared as the New Beetle Convertible in 2002. The car that debuts in LA will be the third generation of the Beetle soft-top. Volkswagen Australia is not declaring its hand yet, but with the hardtop version certainly coming here next year, we'll bare our collective derrieres in a city thoroughfare if the rag-top Beetle doesn't follow within 12 months. Says the PR blurb: "In creating the latest version of the Beetle Convertible, Volkswagen has reinterpreted the timeless design of bygone days and given the silhouette a sportier and more dynamic look... In the new Beetle Convertible, Volkswagen brings together modern technology and the highest standards of quality with the emotional legacy of the car’s ‘forefather’."
The new open Beetle retains a cloth roof which when open almost completely stows away. VW says the electrically operated unit opens and closes in 10sec at speeds of up to 60km/h.
