LA MOTOR SHOW: Lexus IS flips its wig

Japanese luxury brand to reveal thinly disguised replacement for IS 250C

Lexus will stage a novel online reveal of what will be a successor for its IS 250C convertible ahead of its global debut at the Los Angeles motor show on November 19.

Starting from 1:40pm westcoast US time on November 16 (Monday morning in Australia and exactly 72 hours before its world premiere in LA next week), the LF-C2 concept will be gradually revealed hour by hour online "through the intensifying glow of a solar eclipse".

The 'open-air' concept will also make its simultaneous online debut at the same website -- http://lexus-int.com/motorshow/72-hour-eclipse-reveal.html.

Lexus is yet to reveal any details of the LF-C2, but the accompanying teaser image reveals a silhouette all but confirms it will be a four-seat drop-top version of the latest IS mid-size sedan, which has just been updated for 2015 and is also pictured in side profile here.

In fact, it's likely to share more in common with the two-door Lexus RC Coupe, which arrives in 350 form this month and range-topping RC F guise next February.

It's not yet clear what engine/s will power the new IS convertible – or what it will be called -- but the outgoing IS 250 C is available exclusively with a 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine (priced from $76,130).

That makes it a direct rival to entry-level versions of mid-size German convertibles like the Audi A5 Cabriolet, BMW 4 Series Convertible and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet.

Expect the lightly disguised concept car to morph into a production model for global release some time next year.
