Mercedes-Benz has revealed the SLS AMG GT Final Edition, which will make simultaneous world debuts at the Tokyo and Los Angeles motor shows this Wednesday (November 20).
However, while 350 examples will be built in both left- and right-hand drive form – and in convertible and ‘gullwing’ coupe guises -- none will be sold in Australia, where the standard GT version of the SLS AMG GT is not available.
Instead, Australians will have access to a another special-edition SLS model to mark the end of production of Mercedes-AMG’s flagship supercar.
“We’ll have our own special swansong for the SLS here before the end of this year, but it won’t be called the Final Edition,” Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific spokesman Jerry Stamoulis told motoring.com.au.
Like the SLS GT Final Edition, Australia’s last SLS will not be based on the range-topping Black version which offers 40kW more power but 15Nm less torque than the regular SLS AMG (420kW/615Nm).
However, in line with demand for highly specified versions of the SLS in Australia, we understand about 10 special-edition SLS vehicles will be offered here, loaded to the gills with all the luxury options including ‘designo’ features.
In any case, Mercedes advises that two of the nine SLS AMG Black Series models earmarked for Australia and New Zealand are yet to be spoken for.
Mercedes is yet to announce full specifications of the SLS AMG GT Final Edition, but both the coupe and convertible will be powered by the GT’s 435kW 6.2-litre AMG V8 and fitted with a contrasting black bonnet, big red brake callipers and carbon-fibre front and rear spoilers.
Also making its simultaneous global premiere at the LA and Tokyo shows this week will be the S 65 AMG super-limo, which won’t be sold here either because AMG’s 6.0-litre V12 will be reserved for the S 65 Coupe.
