LaFerrari customers culled

Hybrid hypercar buyers to be personally selected by Ferrari chairman
The over-subscribed order book for Ferrari’s $1.5 million LaFerrari hypercar is being personally culled by company Chairman Luca di Montezemolo.
Ferrari has more than 1000 millionaires desperate to buy the petrol-electric hybrid V12 supercar launched at the Geneva motor show, but only 499 will be built.
Remembering the speculators who sold-on the limited edition Enzo at inflated prices when it launched back in 2002, Ferrari is determined the LaFerrari won’t suffer the same fate.
All potential owners will receive the good or bad news before the end of the year, including local applicants. About seven LaFerraris are expected to make it to Australia and New Zealand, the sales territory of the newly-announced factory-owned distributor, Ferrari Australasia.
“To say the enquiry has been phenomenal would be an understatement,” Ferrari Australasia managing director Herbert Appleroth said.
“It’s not a matter of whether you have the money or are well-to-do, it’s a loyalty activity and our chairman personally selects which customers get the cars based on certain criteria.
“It’s not just about who bought the most expensive cars, it’s also about your engagement with Ferrari. Who loves the brand, who goes to the Formula One clubs, who comes to the factory, who does Corsa Pilote, who really lives and breathes the brand.
“What we wanted to get correct in this super-limited edition is to not have the speculators. So we have had to vet the list extremely hard, which means some customers who are valid customers won’t receive the car. But that’s supply and demand.”
Ferrari should deliver the first LaFerrari in October, with the total production run lasting around two years.
Meanwhile, the McLaren P1, the LaFerrari’s limited edition rival also launched at Geneva, is reported to have about 800 orders for a production run of 375 cars. Customers for that car are being vetted on the basis of their relationship with McLaren and their supercar experience.
