Ferrari has released the first images of its 708kW LaFerrari Spider roadster ahead of its official launch this September at the Paris motor show.
Based on the LaFerrari coupe, the new Spider gains a pair of rear buttresses and a prominent roll-over hoop that sits behind the driver and passenger.
Unlike other Ferrari convertibles like the California T or 488 Spider, instead of a clever folding hard-top the fastest (and most expensive) Ferrari drop-top ever has to make do with a removable carbon-fibre hard-top, plus a soft-top that can be stored on-board and used in unexpected downpours.
The Italian supercar-maker claims “significant and extensive” modifications were made in the transition from coupe to roadster to ensure torsional stiffness and aerodynamics matched the coupe roof up and down.
Originally, just 499 LaFerrari coupes were made back in 2013, but the roadster is set to be even more exclusive with only around 200 Spiders rumoured to be planned for production.
All of the LaFerrari Spider limited production run are now sold out, claims the car-maker.
Anticipated to have cost around $2 million (plus local taxes), the drop-top Ferrari hybrid is expected to come with the same 588kW 6.3-litre naturally-aspirated V12 as the coupe, which combines a 120kW electric motor in a HY-KERS petrol-electric drive system to deliver total output of 708kW/700Nm.
The LaFerrari Spider is expected to reach 100km/h in less than three seconds and continue to 200km/h in less than seven seconds and 300km/h in less than 15 seconds, before topping out in excess of 350km/h.
Ferrari is expected to release more information on the LaFerrari Spider closer to the Paris motor show in late September.
