Lambo gets a Superleggera up
A 70kg weight reduction makes for an even faster Lamborghini GallardoBugatti's Veyron can rest easy, for the moment.
Lamborghini's latest iteration of the Gallardo, the LP 570-4 Superleggera, can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds and tops out at a maximum 325km/h.
The Lamborghini's 5.2-litre V10 engine develops 419kW (a little higher than the Gallardo LP 560-4) and 540Nm of torque, putting its power to the road via permanent all-wheel drive.
By contrast the entry-level Veyron, with 736kW and 1250Nm, reaches 100km/h in 2.5 seconds and reaches 408km/h (The top-shelf Super Sport version, with its 8.0-litre W12 engine developing 883kW and 1500Nm of torque, is electronically limited to 415km/h, for safety reasons).
Lamborghini shouldn't be too distressed. Although we can't quote a local price for the Veyron because it simply isn't sold here and the local Lamborghini importers haven't yet quoted a figure for the Superleggera, the Veyron's US$1.7 million is quite a bit more than the Lamborghini's stateside price of US$237,600.
The range-topping Superleggera weighs 70kg less than the Gallardo LP 560-4, qualifying it as the company's lightest car. It is reportedly a sensation on the racetrack.
The new Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera will take pride of place on the Lamborghini stand at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show that opens this week.
