Lamborghini Aventador to get hybrid V12 in 2020

Even more power for flagship V12 Lamborghini Aventador thanks to the addition of an electric motor

Lamborghini's all-new replacement for the current Lamborghini Aventador will come equipped with a powerful hybridised powertrain, it has been revealed.

Set to combine a development of the current car's mighty normally-aspirated 6.5-litre V12, according to

the next-generation Lamborghini Aventador will feature a front-mounted electric motor that will boost both power and torque, and also bring a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.

Currently the V12-powered Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, without any hybrid assistance at all, produces an epic 566kW and 720Nm of torque.

This suggests with the hybrid additions the unnamed replacement coupe could muster almost 700kW and churn out an incredible 1000Nm of torque.

Thanks to four driven wheels and the electric motor's instant torque delivery, that computes to a sub-2.0sec sprint to 100km/h, with a top speed that should match the out-going Aventador's 350km/h.

Before the all-new Aventador arrives, the Brit mag claims its electrified powertrain will be previewed as soon as next year under the rear boot lid of an ultra-lightweight limited-run hypercar.

Currently developed under the codename LB48H, the new hypercar was reportedly shown to prospective customers back in June, with rumoured price tag of around £2 million ($A3.5m).

Expect an extreme new look, an outlandish aero package and plenty of weight-saving to ensure it matches the performance of rivals like the Bugatti Chiron, at least from standstill to 200km/h.

Despite reducing emissions and fuel consumption and providing a pure-electric range of up to 50km -- a requirement for countries like China -- the biggest challenge currently facing engineers working on the next flagship V12 Lamborghini is the added weight of the hybrid system.

Even the lightest hybrid's electric motor, battery pack and control modules are said to add 150-200kg to the kerb weight.

Add that to the current car's 1575kg kerb weight and the next car could tip the scales at a hefty 1800kg.

This has raised big concerns internally at Lamborghini as the Italian car-maker is keen to retain its crown of the fastest production car around Germany's Nurburgring -- a record that currently stands at 6:45sec after the firm's lightest and most powerful Aventador SVJ beat the Porsche 911 GT2 RS earlier this year.

Instead of the current car's conventional all-wheel drive system, which uses a prop-shaft to channel torque from the rear-mounted V12 to the front axle, the next-gen Aventador will rely on a front-mounted electric motor to drive the front wheels.

This approach saves weight and will allow for full torque-vectoring.

What Lamborghini isn't considering is turbocharging or downsizing the V12, preferring the reactions and character of an atmo V12.

As well as the next-generation electrified Aventador, the powerful V12 coupe will be joined by a plug-in version of the Urus SUV that's also set to arrive in 2020 as Lamborghini races to curb its fleet-average CO2 emissions.
