Lamborghini shaping up for Sian roadster reveal

Italian supercar-maker posts obscure image of new model's winglets, apparently confirming drop-top hybrid hypercar rumours

Lamborghini has released a teaser of the new model it plans to reveal on July 8 and it appears to confirm it will be based on last year's Sian FKP hypercar.

The preview image, posted to Twitter, doesn't seem that telling at first glance -- until you realise the same distinctive air-bending winglets are employed on the rear fenders of the 577kW Sian FKP.

A second darkened image of the rear of the hypercar is even more revealing. When brightened it's possible to make out both the Sian's hexagonal LED tail-lights and exhaust pipe, plus the same winglets.

This suggests the rumours that Lambo will unveil a Sian roadster are spot on.

Back in September 2019 the the Sian was touted as an advanced four-wheel signpost to the next-generation Aventador.

That's because it came powered by a naturally-aspirated V12 engine hybridised with the aid of supercapacitors rather than batteries.

Highlighting the many benefits of the technology, in this case, the supercapacitors boosted the 577kW 6.5-litre V12’s power output by 25kW and allowed for a pure-electric range of up to 10km.

The chief benefit for the electrified Lambo hypercar is that the set-up only increases weight by 32kg – a fraction of the mass of conventional lithium-ion battery cells.

Combined, Lamborghini said this enabled the Sian to hit 100km/h in a blistering 2.8 seconds before topping out at 350km/h.

As well as storming outright pace, the same hybrid set-up overcomes the considerable shortcomings of the Aventador’s single-clutch automated manual transmission.

According to the car-maker, the torque-filling properties of the hybrid V12 provides for a more seamless transmission, helping it match the smooth up- and downshifts of a more complex dual-clutch transmission.

Back in 2019, Lamborghini said it would make just 63 examples of the Sian FKP 37, each priced at $3.6 million ($A5.2m). It’s thought the roadster will be sold in similar numbers and its price tag will exceed that of the coupe.

Stay tuned as all will be revealed later on Wednesday night in Europe (Thursday, July 9, 2:00am AEST).
