There are few better avenues for premium sports car manufacturers to promote the dynamic excellence of their offerings than a one-make race series.
Among the best-known ones are the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge – and four years ago the raging bull of Sant’Agata also got into the act via the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series, which is now expanding its global footprint.
Given the growing stature of the Asian market – not to mention the blossoming motorsport infrastructure in the region – Lamborghini last year inaugurated the Asia-Pacific Super Trofeo series, with amateur and Pro-Am teams from China claiming the two championships in the grand finale at the Shanghai International Circuit.
This year’s series returns to Shanghai for the opening round, with subsequent rounds to be held in Malaysia, Korea, Japan and Macau, with the grand final scheduled for November 23-24 – fittingly, in Rome, Italy.
The weapon of choice for this year’s series is the latest development of the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo, which is said to offer greater aero efficiency, enhanced thermal performance and better chassis balance than last year’s Trofeo car.
There are a couple of firsts for this year’s Asian series, with an Indian driver marking his nation’s debut in the championship, and Korea hosting a Trofeo race for the first time.
Super Trofeo was first launched in 2009, in Europe, as a means of further enhancing the brand’s sporting credentials, and this year also marks the debut of the inaugural series in the United States – Lamborghini’s largest market.
The format for each round of the Super Trofeo series includes a 35-minute long qualifying race to determine the driver’s starting position, followed by two 50-minute long races for amateur and pro-amateur drivers.
“The second Super Trofeo series in Asia comes alongside the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini, celebrating 100 years of innovation in half the time, bringing further measures of Italian passion and excitement to this extreme racing series,” said Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann.
