Lamborghini has pledged to invest more than €1.8 billion ($A2.8b) in electrification that will see the Italian supercar marque offer a full range of hybrids by 2024 and its first EV before the end of the decade.
Speaking to Italian business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann explained that €1.5 billion ($A2.3b) would be spent electrifying its current models – the Lamborghini Huracan, Urus and the successor to the Aventador – via petrol-electric hybrid powertrains.
“We have earmarked €1.8 billion, but in reality it will be much more – the biggest investment in the history of Lamborghini Automobili,” Winkelmann told the paper.
“The investment will be huge because we have to face the full-electric era while maintaining the values of Lamborghini’s DNA. It will be a very difficult challenge.”
Lamborghini’s confirmation that it has finally embarked on its path to electrification follows rivals like Ferrari and McLaren, which have both recently introduced plug-in hybrid powertrains on its latest supercars.
Luckily, Lamborghini is expected to draw considerably on parent Volkswagen Group’s huge wealth of experience when it comes to hybrid and EVs.
It’s also thought Lamborghini could co-develop an all-electric hypercar with both Audi and Porsche that will be built on a lightweight architecture and use pioneering powertrain technology sourced from EV experts, Rimac, as part of the recent Bugatti sale.
