Land Rover leads way to final frontier

Australians ready for lift-off
Land Rover's competition to send four lucky people into space has spurred Australians to new heights. According to the importer, entries from Aussies outnumber all bar two other countries.
The car company is leveraging its partnership with Virgin Galactic to promote its own brand via the competition, which calls on the wining entry to articulate what adventure means to people. A video produced by Land Rover illustrates the kind of work that will win the comp. You can see it here
The video features Richard Branson, Virginia McKenna – of 'Born Free' fame – explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and apparently mad TV presenter Bear Grylls. Land Rover and Virgin Galactic estimate the value of four tickets into space to be worth over US $1 million. The winning team will be flown to the USA, where they will undergo three days of training at Spaceport America, in New Mexico. Then they'll take the ride of a lifetime in Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo – ironically represented without space between the constituent words.
SpaceShipTwo is capable of reaching Mach 3.5 (3½ times the speed of sound), which falls well short of escape velocity, but the suborbital aircraft does induce the sensation of weightlessness and provides spectacular views of the planet below.
"We knew the appetite for space travel would be huge around the world but also that this is still an area most people know very little about," said Gabi Whitfield, Land Rover's global PR director.
"We wanted to give our competition entrants as much detail as possible on the prize, to get them really excited about this once-in-a-lifetime experience," Whitfield was quoted saying in a press release.
Land Rover and Virgin Galactic formed an alliance in April of this year, tying together what is claimed to be the sense of adventure and pioneering spirit of both firms, not forgetting their technological innovation.
The competition is open until November 21.
