The tacky Taurus is no more. The Ford Motor Company produced the last of the outdated jelly-mould sedans late last week and has "idled' production at its Atlanta plant.
Ford's mid-size entry in the American market for two decades, the Taurus couldn't match sales against the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, despite substantial fleet and rental sales. The Taurus will be replaced by the Fusion model, which is based on the Mazda6.
According to Ford the company produced 7.5 million Taurus units since its introduction in 1985, at two assembly plants: Atlanta and Chicago. Production of the Taurus at Chicago was ceased in 2004 when the plant began output of the Ford Five Hundred, Freestyle and Mercury Montego models.
Nearly 2000 employees have lost their jobs upon the suspension of the Atlanta plant, which opened in 1947 and only last year ranked as number one for productivity.
