Last year was a disaster for the Ford Mustang in the US

Pony car suffers worst sales performance on home turf in its 60-year history

Just 44,003 examples of the Ford Mustang found a home in 2024 in the US, marking the worst year for the coupe and convertible in its domestic market in its 60-year history.

Sales were so bad that the Blue Oval's all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV outsold the original Mustang by 7000 cars.

Before last year's dismal sales, 2022 was the worst year for Mustang sales, when Ford only managed to shift 47,566 cars. The latest figures reflect a broader drop-off in demand for large coupes and convertibles in America.

Worst still, the decline is expected to continue into 2025, following the fourth quarter of 2024 in which just 7518 cars found homes.

The Mach-E, meanwhile, peaked at 51,745 US sales in 2024, reflecting growth of 35.6 per cent compared to the previous year off the back of an aggressive pricing and nationwide discount campaign.

Ford USA has provided no explanation on why Mustang sales dropped off so much in 2024.
