Latest auto technology on display in Melbourne

Melbourne Convention Centre will be the centre point for future-looking Australian technology

Block out March 20 to March 23 for a visit to the Industry Innovation and Technology Display, which will be held as part of Australian Automotive Week at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre at Southbank.

Taking up a position in the concourse foyer at the Casino end of the Exhibition Hall, the free display will "showcase the cutting edge technology of Australian-designed and manufactured vehicles", featuring displays by local manufacturers Holden, Ford and Toyota.

Among the cars on display will be a Camry hybrid NASCAR pace car, as well as the latest models from each of the Big Three.

Specialist car-makers will also feature, with mid-engined sports cars from Bolwell and Joss, the FR1 project car that featured at the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show, and Formula SAE and Spectrum Formula Ford race cars also on display.

Future technology displays by the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Automotive Technology (Auto CRC) will include a speed sign recognition device that constantly updates a speed restriction LCD display on the car's instrument panel, and a portable visual training device for on-line workers, allowing virtual training on new functions not yet installed on the production line.

Also, as part of Australian Automotive Week, the Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia will host a Change by Design conference with the theme Active Safety. Speakers from TAC, VicRoads, Victoria Police, Robert Bosch Australia and Monash University will explore the use of technologies to prevent accidents.
