As we reported earlier in the year in our car related movies coming to cinemas in 2023 wrap, Ferrari is a biopic of automotive mogul Enzo Ferrari, whose family redefined the idea of the high-powered Italian sports car and practically spawned the concept of Formula One racing.
Based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine by motorsport journalist Brock Yates, the film is set in the summer of 1957, behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier.
Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers' passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.

The film stars Adam Driver (Girls, House of Gucci, Star Wars) as Enzo Ferrari, Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura Ferrari as well as Patrick Dempsey as Piero Taruffi.
The turbulent, trying and emotional life moments captured in this story are a case of life imitating art with the road to film premiere just as dramatic. The film's director, Michael Mann first began exploring making the film around 2000.
In August 2015, it was understood that Christian Bale was in negotiations to star as Ferrari with filming to begin in 2016. Bale bailed from the film in January 2016 over concerns about meeting the weight requirements for the role before the start of production. In April 2017, it was reported that Hugh Jackman would portray Ferrari, but that didn't eventuate either.

During this almost 20-year period, the production and distribution company attached to the project changed hands multiple times and is pinned for being the main cause for the delay in filming and talent acquisition. It wasn't until February 2022 when Adam Driver was locked in as Ferrari with Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley also joining the cast. Filming wrapped in late October 2022.
The film's latest delay came in part thanks to the SAG-AFTRA writer's strike in Hollywood. The film will be released in Australia on Thursday, January 4, 2024 following global release on Christmas Day 2023.
