French car blog Worldscoop.forumpo.fr has unearthed pics of the replacement for the current Mercedes-Benz GL SUV.
Renamed ‘GLS’, to help align the big SUV with the luxurious S-Class limousine, the new flagship SUV remains based on the old car’s platform but receives a comprehensive re-skin that sees both a new nose and redesigned rear bumper and a new interior.
Under the bonnet there’s an updated range of more powerful and efficient engines that’s thought will begin with the 189kW 3.0-litre V6 diesel that will be badged and GLS 350d with a nine-speed automatic.
Spearheading the range will be a mighty GLS 65 AMG that’s gets the monstrous 463kW/1000Nm 6.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V12 from the S 65 AMG. Despite a kerbweight in excess of 2500kg, the GLS 65 could hit 100km/h from standstill is less than 5.5 seconds.
In some markets, Mercedes-Benz might also offer a four-cylinder diesel version and it’s almost certain a version of the 155kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol plug-in hybrid that powers the current C 350e will also be offered in the big SUV.
Set to be unveiled at the LA motor show next month and on sale in the first half of next year, the GLS is expected to form the basis of the first Maybach-branded SUV to go head-to-head with new rivals like the Bentley Bentayga revealed at the Frankfurt motor show and, even, the as yet unseen Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
