Patents of the all-new BMW X7 have surfaced online, suggesting the production version of the German car-maker's biggest and most luxurious SUV to date will stay true to the controversial concept that was shown last year at the Frankfurt motor show.
The new images, which were filed with Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property (NPI), are said to be genuine and preview BMW's first true rival for a full-size Range Rover.
According to the copyright application, the production X7 will be sold with alloy wheels ranging in size from 19- to 22-inch.
As well as the standard look, BMW's larger SUV will also come with an M Performance package trim that's expected to add a sportier body kit.
Set to be launched at the Los Angeles motor show in November, the large three-row SUV will initially come equipped with a traditional 3.0-litre turbo-diesel (294kW/760Nm) and two turbo-petrol engines – 3.0-litre straight-six and 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.
Later on, a more advanced plug-in hybrid version will arrive, plus potentially a range-topping 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 that could power a flagship M Performance model.
All X7 variants will come with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission; a two-wheel drive model will not be offered.
Like this year's all-new X5, the BMW X7 will be built in the US and based on the BMW's CLAR architecture. Unlike the X5, though, the X7 will get full air suspension and an estimated 100mm longer wheelbase, helping to liberate a huge amount of interior space and make the flagship SUV a true seven-seater.
Inside the X7, all models will get a full-length panoramic sunroof and BMW's next-gen iDrive 7.0 infotainment system that incorporates with two 12.3-inch touch-screens and can be operated using gesture control.
Both fit and finish will be 7 Series level, with high-quality wood and leather found on all models.
Like its rivals, the big BMW will feature a long list of options that includes five-zone climate control, second-row captain's chairs and a high-tech rear-seat entertainment system.
Following the new X5's launch Down Under this December, the X7 should arrive in Australia by the middle of 2019.
