Leaked: Ford patents clever puddle lights

Blue Oval caught trying to patent puddle lights that shine car’s status on floor

Ford has become the latest manufacturer to have its top secret patent submissions leaked online, as images appeared late last night as plans of intelligent puddle lights emerged.

The patents, leaked by US car magazine Motortrend, appear to show the US car giant is secretly working on wing-mirror-mounted puddle lights that are capable of displaying the car’s status to the driver before they climb aboard.

This could mean everything from the pure-electric car’s battery status, to a petrol or diesel’s fuel level, could soon be displayed graphically on the floor.

The patents also indicate the puddle lights could be configured to project on a garage wall, providing a larger display, if needed.

According to the patent hunters, the puddle lights will also be able to display updates in different colours and, even, be made to flash if the information is crucial - like a low fuel warning.

It’s believed the technology will be available on Fords in the very near future, appearing on cars possibly as early as 2018.
