American TV celebrity Jay Leno is believed to be the anonymous buyer of Volvo's one and only S60 Polestar Concept.
Leno, known for his fascination with cars and his extensive private collection, has driven the one-off S60's predecessor, the C30 Polestar — and he and his mechanic were impressed by that car, by all accounts. As the follow-up to the C30, the S60 Polestar Concept was revealed in Sweden two weekends ago. It's a showcase of advanced running gear in a modified body shell, comprising carbonfibre front quarter panels and flared rear wheel arches — extending to the rear doors.
Logically, since Leno liked the C30 Polestar, he would put up his hand for the unique S60 to add to his fleet of collectible cars. And the TV host, reportedly earning US $100,000 an episode for his late night chat show, certainly has the wherewithal to afford the US $300,000 S60 — which would come down in price if it entered production. Australian journalists visiting Sweden to see the car up close (pictured) sought confirmation from Polestar CEO Hans Baath that Leno was the buyer. But Mr Baath wasn't prepared to reveal the identity of the buyer in question.
"No, I didn't say that," he replied, somewhat unconvincingly. The Polestar boss has visited Leno's museum and was apparently impressed by the McLaren F1 on display there.
Officially the tuning firm remains adamant it won't disclose who the buyer is, but Mr Baath would clearly like to do so, at some point in the future.
"I think it would be quite cool to reveal [the buyer's identity] when we can..." he said.
