Toyota Motor Corporation says a possibility exists that if the front seat belts (both driver and passenger) are extended quickly with strong force, the internal components of the Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) may jam and the seat belt will not retract or extend any further.
In the worst case, if the seat belt is locked in this condition, the occupant may not be able to properly fasten the seat belt. There have been no accidents or injuries reported in Australia.
Worldwide, 43,000 vehicles will be recalled encompassing IS250 and GS300/430s produced between July 2005 and January 2006. Toyota says owners of involved vehicles in Australia will receive a campaign notification by mail during May 2006 advising them to contact their local Lexus Authorised Dealer to arrange for repairs to be made.
The front seat belt assemblies will be replaced at no cost to the vehicle owner.
