Lexus GS F Sport revealed

Premium Japanese brand set to whip the covers off sporty version of its executive-size sedan

The first clues surfaced two months ago, and then Lexus South Africa displayed a car out of the blue... Now Lexus has officially revealed the upcoming GS F Sport in all its glory.

Due to make its a public appearance at next week’s SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas, the new model goes on sale internationally in early 2012.

The F Sport’s cosmetic tweaks include a new front bumper design with large brake cooling ducts and mesh upper and lower grilles, while out back resides a bumper diffuser and rear spoiler. The car rides on dark metallic finish 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/40/19 rubber at the front and 265/35/19 gumballs at the rear.

Inside, there’s the availability of new Garnet (deep red) leather upholstery, which contrasts with aluminium trim elements and a black headliner.

The F Sport seats are 16-way adjustable, and other sporty elements include drilled alloy pedals and a dimple perforated leather steering wheel and gear knob covers. In addition, the F Sport logo features on the doorsill scuff plates and steering wheel.

In terms of technical upgrades, the F Sport gains retuned front and rear suspension, and Adaptive Variable Suspension with four settings – Eco, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+. Meanwhile, the Variable Gear Ratio Steering automatically reduces the steering ratio by around 10 per cent, while the Electric Power Steering increases steering assist torque by four per cent.

The GS 450h F Sport also benefits from the Lexus Dynamic Handling system, which the company claims makes it the world’s first hybrid vehicle to feature an integrated four-wheel steering system. At speeds below 80km/h the front and rear wheels turn in opposite directions, while the inverse applies at higher speeds.

Although the F-Sport upgrades do not liberate any more power from the GS’s 3.5-litre V6, the upcoming GS-F performance flagship could score a detuned version of the LFA’s V10 engine or an amped-up hybrid powertrain.

Look out for motoring.com.au's international launch drive of the new Lexus GS towards the middle of November...
