Lexus RC F scores added driver-assist tech

High-performance coupe also gains new colours and extra comfort and convenience features

Lexus Australia has announced a significant upgrade for its RC coupe range, focused primarily on the flagship RC F, but also including a revised V6 for the RC 350.

Changes for the RC F comprise a new Drive Start Control system, a 10.3-inch infotainment screen and a larger touch pad.

Additionally, the Drive Mode Select system now features a custom mode, allowing the driver to pick and choose different settings for powertrain, chassis and air conditioning. The Lexus Safety System is upgraded also, with pedestrian detection now incorporated.

Switchgear for the radar-based active cruise control has been simplified, and the Lane Departure Warning facility now offers steering assistance and steering wheel vibration.

According to Lexus, the Drive Start Control system ensures "smooth starts and optimal rapid acceleration when the driver is using the shift lever," which sounds like a launch control system, but the company's press release states explicitly that the system "will not engage when the car's traction control is switched off".

New colours for the RC F are Zinnia Yellow – as seen on the LC 500 coupe – and Titanium, which replaces a previous colour, Sonic Silver.

A 'Carbon' variant remains available, fitted with carbon-fibre roof, rear wing and interior trim. But the carbon-fibre bonnet has been replaced by an aluminium unit. And the 20-inch alloy wheels of the RC F Carbon are now presented in a matt finish.

Mechanically, the RC F stays with its 351kW V8, displacing 5.0 litres. Peak torque is 530Nm. The engine continues to drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels.

All these changes are introduced to the RC F for a price adjustment of $149, increasing the car's price to $138,100.

Lesser RC variants have also been updated. The RC 350's 3.5-litre V6 has been tweaked for improved fuel efficiency and driveability with the adoption of intelligent variable valve timing for the inlet cams and an integrated catalytic converter.

Lexus claims that the V6 is now over 3.2 per cent more economical, at 9.1L/100km. Output is increased 1kW and 2Nm to 232kW and 380Nm, respectively.

Formerly the RC 200t, the RC 300 has been renamed to align with other Lexus models, but mechanically the RC 300 is unchanged. The RC 300 and the RC 350 do inherit the same interior and driver-assist updates as the RC F.

Prices have risen for most variants, although the biggest adjustment – for the RC F Carbon – has been downward.
