Lexus recalls IS models for Takata airbags
Nearly 22,000 cars subject to recall for defective airbagsLexus has issued a recall notice for IS models built between 2005 and 2011, and fitted with a front-passenger airbag manufactured by Takata.
Toyota's prestige brand has previously recalled the slow-selling SC430 for that model's faulty Takata airbags, but this latest recall is on a much larger scale. According to the company, 21,750 vehicles are affected by the recall. No deaths or injuries have been recorded in Australia as yet, however.
The vehicles concerned are the IS 250, the IS 250C, the IS 350 and the IS F, all with katashiki codes GSE20/21 and – for the IS F – USE20.
As with other Takata-related airbag defects, the airbag may shower shrapnel in the face of the seat occupant, due to corrosion in the inflator. Lexus will be in touch with vehicle owners by mail once the parts are available to effect repairs.
