The respected US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has granted its highest safety rating to the Lexus RX.
Scoring a maximum safety rating across a series of tests including offset frontal, side and rear impacts as well as the newly introduced rollover test, the Lexus SUV was given the nod as Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.
Qualifying for the award, a vehicle must be fitted with stability control and score the highest "Good" rating in all tests. In all, there are four ratings: "Good", "Acceptable", "Marginal" and "Poor."
The good news was welcomed by Australian Lexus chief Tony Cramb who said "It’s great to see the IIHS recognise the efforts of Lexus engineers. Lexus devoted well over $30 million dollars and 233 vehicles solely for the purpose of RX crash-testing and development."
The non-profit IIHS organisation is funded by US auto insurers and was established in 1959. It has been recognised for a long time as an authority on vehicle safety.
