Lexus SC430 cops a nip and tuck

Lexus has treated its SC430 to a mid-life nip and tuck to the keep the four-year-old coupe-convertible fresh in the face of newer, sharper opposition.

Headlining the revisions is a new six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission that replaces the outgoing model's five-speeder. The 4.3lt quad-cam V8 engine, which produces 210kW and 419Nm, is carried over unchanged.

Another key upgrade is the incorporation of Lexus' Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), which is claimed to provide improved visibility on winding roads using the vehicle's high-intensity discharge low-beam headlamps.

Visual clues that distinguish the new model from its predecessor include a new, lower radiator grille with six horizontal bars, redesigned headlamps and a new front bumper with a chrome centre bar in the fog-lamp recesses.

SC430's derriere features a revised tail-light cluster that is somehow intended to provide an "increased sense of width and luxury". A slightly dubious claim, but the new satin-finish five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels are undoubtedly an improvement.

Pricing has moved north slightly. The upgraded Lexus SC430 wears a price tag of $160,900, which is still well below the $212,400 demanded by a BMW 645Ci convertible, or the $209,000 required for a Mercedes-Benz SL350.
