Lexus sports a more dynamic LS

Slip on the driving gloves and fine-tune your reflexes. Lexus introduces the driver's LS 460

If the Lexus LS 460 doesn't quite have the dynamic edge you are after, then maybe you had better take a look at the just-announced Sports version of the Toyota offshoot's large luxury sedan.

The LS 460 Sports isn't quite your AMG Benz or M-series BMW, in that the tune of the V8 engine remains unchanged, but it does build in more attitude via a body kit, firmer air suspension, Brembo brake package, 19-inch wheels and a tricked-up interior incorporating more supportive front seats and a revised eight-speed, paddle-shift auto transmission.

Lexus says the sporty LS with its revised air suspension settings and "upgraded" stabiliser bars handles flatter, shifts more quickly (upshifts happen in 0.3 seconds) and stops more assuredly than regular models -- via its dinner-plate size Brembos. The revised front seats also grip driver and front passenger better in the hip, shoulder and thigh areas to minimise the effects of the greater G-forces.

With a "black weave" mesh grille, front spoiler, new side rocker mouldings and the unique 19-inch alloys there's no mistaking the Sports LS from regular versions.

The 4.6-litre V8 remains unchanged in the Sports LS with outputs of 280kW and 493Nm.

Joining the new Sports model is a general refresh for the regular LS 460 that brings more responsive handling, through revisions to the air suspension, a redesigned centre cluster in the instrument panel, an economy mode for the air-conditioning, a bar-graph indicator to help fuel misers extract maximum economy, a slimline rear entertainment screen and a driver's seat that slides out of the way for easier entry and exit.

The latest LS also gets a new grille, new front and rear bumpers, and inbuilt indicators on the side mirrors. LED running lights along the base of the headlights also make an appearance.

Lexus has priced the Sports identically to the regular LS 460 with a tag of $199,900 before statutory and delivery charges. The numerous dynamic upgrades are partially offset through the loss of quad-zone climate control and the reclining rear seats that are standard on the regular LS 460 -- but, because of the latter, the boot is bigger.
