Most drivers speed when late: surveyMore than half of Australian motorists say they drive up to 20km/h over the speed limit when they're running late, a survey has found.
Insurance company Budget Direct surveyed 5000 drivers during September, asking them to confess their driving misdemeanours.
Fifty-three per cent of respondents said they exceeded the speed limit by up to 20km/h when running late, while 15 per cent said they only exceeded it in an emergency.
Women are more likely to put the foot down, the survey found, with 51 per cent saying they regularly break the speed limit, compared to 48 per cent of men.
Slightly less than a third of respondents said they never drove faster than the speed limit.
Drivers in Western Australia were the most likely to speed, closely followed by Queenslanders.
Australian drivers are also an impatient lot, with 51 per cent admitting to using their horn to hurry other drivers up.
Budget Direct chief executive Michael Weston said the figures were disturbing, especially considering the country's annual road toll of more than 1600.
"Australian drivers need to allow more time to get to their destinations, which will enable them to be more relaxed behind the wheel and in turn reduce speeding and the death toll in this country," Weston said in a statement.
"Drivers need to stop being in such a hurry because it's costing lives."
