Morgan Plus LM62 celebrates 1962 Le Mans victory

Just 62 will be made, paying tribute to ‘David versus Goliath’ win of 2.0-litre class at famous race

Morgan has announced it will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its victory in the 2.0-litre class at the 1962 Le Mans 24 Hours by introducing a new special-edition based on its Morgan Plus Four sports car.

Just 62 examples of the 2022 Morgan Plus Four LM62 will be built, each painted in either dark green or red paint that was worn by works Morgan racers of the period.

The commemorative model comes standard with a Heritage White hard-top that's inspired by the original winner.

It also comes with the option of special stickers that include the race car-style roundels with the original '29' numbering worn by the winner.

LM62 badging, silver-painted wire wheels, a Le Mans-style filler cap and a domed rear panel all hint further at the original winner.

Finally, there's extra driving lamps, body-coloured A-pillars, a black splitter, polished stoneguards, black mohair sidescreens and a dual-mode sports exhaust with black tailpipe finishers.

Within the Morgan's cockpit there's an LM62 plaque, new laser-engraved leather door pulls, embroidered head restraints, a painted steering wheel centre, a wooden dash and transmission tunnel, and upgraded black leather seats.

Morgan says owners of the LM62 will be offered an optional soft-top, photographic build record, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, chrome rear-view mirror and an accessory pack that includes two-eared wheel spinners and headlight tape.

Power comes from a BMW-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 190kW and 350Nm of torque, driving through either a manual or automatic transmission.

In the UK, the 2022 Morgan Plus Four LM62 is priced from £78,995 ($A150,000).

It's not been confirmed if any of the 62 cars it plans to build will be destined for Australia.

Commenting on the new LM62 special-edition, Morgan boss Steve Morris said: “The 1962 Le Mans class-winning Morgan Plus 4 holds a special place in the hearts of Morgan enthusiasts, employees and owners around the world.

"It marked one of Morgan’s greatest motorsport achievements, the car covering more than 2200 miles at an average running speed of almost 94mph, and triumphing – like David versus Goliath – over our bigger, and better-funded, rivals of the time.

“With the Morgan Plus Four LM62, we pay homage to this famous vehicle and incredible moment in time, 60 years on. Limited to just 62 individually numbered examples, the bespoke touches and enhanced level of standard specification make these cars an enticing proposition for customers wanting a piece of Morgan history.”
